Options include: Spain to the Canaries 21 October to 3 November or 3 – 17 November 2019 - £1,999pp* The open ocean is a truly special place where there can be no fixed itinerary as the wind and the weather ultimately dictate the shape each day. On this two-week voyage from the Galician coast of north west Spain to The Canaries by way of Madeira, see the stunning Cies islands, a Galician Atlantic Island Nature Park and popular birdwatching spot in autumn; hone sailing skills in the warm waters of the Spanish Rias (deep inlets that characterise this part of the Galician coast), before setting a course for the four-day passage to the Portuguese island of Madeira. Settling in to the rhythm of the sea the crew will alternate between navigating, helming and sail trimming, with plenty of time to simply gaze out on the ocean surrounded by magical sunrises and starry, starry nights. A couple of days exploring the picturesque island of Madeira punctuates the final two-day downwind charge to Gran Canaria and time to find a lovely anchorage to soak up the winter sun. Madeira to the Azores 17 November – 1 December 2019 and 9 - 23 February 2020 – from £1,997pp* Feel the freedom of the open ocean on board a 60ft clipper expedition yacht with the challenge, exhilaration and excitement of a voyage from the Portuguese island of Madeira to the volcanic archipelago of the Azores. Spend two-weeks sailing, training and exploring with a mix of coastal and ocean sailing in the warming winter sun. Having worked through all the key sailing manoeuvres such as tacking and gybing, reefing and knot tying its time to cast off the lines at Funchal and head north west to the Azores. On the five-day passage all the crew will alternate between navigating, helming and sail trimming, whilst possibly spotting whales and dolphins and learning the ancient art of celestial navigation or just gazing out over the vast expanse of ocean. On reaching land there’s time to relax in the cluster of volcanic islands that make up the western sector of the Azores archipelago. Going ashore on Pico there’s the option to hike its eponymous volcano (the highest elevation of the Mid-Atlantic ridge) and explore the cobbled streets of Azores’ oldest city, the UNESCO protected Angra do Heroismo, on the island of Terceira. The final stop on the voyage is the island’s capital Horta and what is said to be the most colourful marina in the world, a haven for yachtsmen and whale watchers alike. The Coast of Morocco 4 – 18 January 2020 - £2,099*pp Welcome in the new year and learn a new skill on a two-week sail down Morocco's Atlantic coast. One of Rubicon 3’s most unusual routes and far off the beaten track of most other yachts this is real adventure sailing with bartering for berthing spaces and wonderful towns to explore. Starting in Cadiz and finishing with an exciting 24-hour sail to the Canaries, there are visits to Tangier, Rabat, El Jadida and Safi amongst other options ashore. In the capital, Rabat there is time to explore the Kasbah of the Udayas, the royal fort from the Berber era and the city’s iconic Hassan Tower, a 12th-century minaret, that soars above the ruins of the mosque. Sailing away from the city after dinner the voyage will catch the warm Moroccan winds with their exotic smells and the sounds of North African music as it wafts across the water under a canopy of stars. UNESCO listed El Jadida is a beautiful town, built by the Portuguese as a fortified colony on the Atlantic coast in the early 16th century, whilst further south the voyage stops in Safi, a town dedicated to the art of making dazzling green glazed tiles. Leaving Morocco, the voyage heads west on warm ocean winds bound for its final stop in Puerto Calero on the island of Lanzarote in the Canaries.
