Celebrate the year in style with Titan HiTours' 2011 calendar of landmark anniversaries and events - and the exciting travel experiences that they inspire With its award-winning programmes, celebrated service levels and unwavering commitment to value for money, there's always a good reason to travel with Titan HiTours (0800 988 5858 http:www.titanhitours.co.uk). This year, however, the escorted tours specialist has identified a wide range of unmissable travel experiences from around the world that are linked to celebrations, anniversaries and other landmark events taking place in 2011. With major happenings taking place this year including the 100th year since the discovery of Machu Picchu and the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, Titan HiTours' selection of travel suggestions should serve to enthuse and inspire customers to discover something new over the next twelve months.
February sees the UK opening of the film ‘True Grit’, a Coen Brothers remake of the classic John Wayne western, that's been garnering rave reviews since it opened in the US just after Christmas. The story focuses on a teenage girl who enlists the aid of a tough US Marshal to track down her father's murderer in the days of the Wild West. Travellers seeking their own taste of the west could saddle up for the 15-day Texas Ranger with New Mexico & Arizona tour, which combines all the highlights of the Big Country with historic Albuquerque, the Grand Canyon and the peaceful resort town of Scottsdale, Arizona. There are five possible departure dates in 2011, with prices from £1,745 per person. In March Titan's attention stays on the Americas for the first 2011 departure of a tour that follows in the Footsteps of the Incas. The itinerary takes in Peru's most dramatic landscapes and colourful peoples, including the traditional communities of Lake Titicaca's floating islands whose way of life has hardly changed since the days of the Inca Empire. A particular highlight of this tour is full day's exploration of Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca citadel that was for years lost in the forests of Peru's mountainous highlands. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the city's rediscovery by the American explorer and historian, Hiram Bingham. The tour departs on 14 March (there are six available departure dates in total) and costs from £3,195 per person. For April attention moves back to the USA for Titan's first 2011 departure of its Georgia & the Carolinas tour. A visit to the region will be particularly poignant this year as 12 April 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. The tour begins in Atlanta, which was almost entirely burned to the ground following its fall to Union forces in 1864, and continues to Savannah and Old Charleston, plus the beautiful gardens and the endless forests of the Appalachian Mountains. Prices start from £1,995 per person. In May, Titan HiTours recommends a trip to Istanbul for the first ever departure of its brand new holiday to Agatha Christie's Pera Palace. This 5-day, single-centre itinerary allows guests to fully experience the opulent splendour of the recently-renovated Pera Palace - Istanbul's grandest and most historic hotel. The novelist Agatha Christie was one of its most famous guests and is said to have written her thriller Murder on the Orient Express whilst staying in Room 411 (which is dedicated to her memory to this day). The holiday costs from £1,195 per person. There's no better way to enjoy the balmy days of June than in the great outdoors - and it doesn't come much greater than in America's National Parks. Some of the country's most famous wilderness preserves are included in The Awe-Inspiring National Parks itinerary, which visits no less than eight National Parks - including Yellowstone, home of Old Faithful geyser and the oldest park of all. The tour also includes a visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which this year marks the 70th anniversary since work ended. There's plenty of choice when it comes to departures for this trip (there are 19 possible dates), with prices from £2,065 per person. This year sees the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Revolution that resulted in the birth of modern-day China. This fascinating country is fully explored on the 18-day Mighty Yangtze River & the Best of China odyssey that includes a six night cruise and visits to the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors, the panda sanctuary at Chongqing and the incredible Great Wall. There are two possible departure dates in July (with 11 others throughout the year), with the July departures costing from £2,745 per person. Then in August, a two-way cruise along the River Seine provides the perfect opportunity to visit the Louvre, which was the site of a major scandal 100 years ago this year, when the museum's famously enigmatic icon - the Mona Lisa - was stolen by a disgruntled employee. The Paris and Normandy river cruise itinerary starts and ends in the City of Lights and includes excursions to Monet's garden at Giverny and the Normandy Beaches, site of the famous D-Day Landings. This 8-day experience has four possible departure dates in August and costs from £2,299 per person. As the days begin to shorten again head to the Sunshine State for guaranteed warmth and another interesting anniversary, its 50 years since Earnest Hemingway died in July 1961. So what better way to honour his literary achievements than by visiting him home in Key West - one of the many highlights on the Florida: Fun in the Sun itinerary (14 days, from £1,945 per person). There are two departures scheduled for September. Or in October New Orleans is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the launch of the first paddle steamer on the Mississippi - named, appropriately, after the city itself. Titan's Southern Sites & Sounds tour (14 days, from £1,865 per person) includes an evening's dinner and cruising aboard a genuine paddle steamer alongside visits to Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans. Over on the other side of the world, it's 160 years since gold was discovered in New South Wales (on a tributary of the Macquarie River), an event that sparked the start of the Australian Gold Rush. Titan HiTours offers a thorough exploration of the county's eastern seaboard on its 22-day Australian Coastal Explorer itinerary, which starts out in Cairns and travels all the way down to Sydney and costs from £3,895 per person. Antarctica is Titan's tip for a December trip as this is the best time of year to visit the frozen continent weather-wise; this month also marks the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott's ill-fated quest to reach the South Pole and a new exhibition entitled 'The Heart of Alone: Antarctic Photography', will be on show in the Queen's Gallery in Buckingham Palace from 21 October 2011 until 15 April 2012. Titan offers the opportunity to see the White Continent on an 18-day Pure Antarctica cruise holiday. Departing in January 2012, the tour takes in all the natural beauty, remarkable wildlife and pristine emptiness of this frozen land from the comforts of the luxurious Hurtigruten cruise ship, MS Fram. This incredible expedition costs from £5,895 per person.
