Deep in the Thai jungle, Paresa Resort Phuket is now taking guests to the first and only elephant sanctuary in Phuket to experience a day in the life of an elephant. Translated as ‘Heaven of all Heavens’ in Sanskrit, Paresa Resort Phuket comprises 48 elegantly appointed pool villas and magnificent suites hidden way by a canopy of banyan trees on Phuket’s west coast. Central to the resort’s ethos is to offer experiences that are in harmony with nature and in keeping with this philosophy, Paresa has added a day at Phuket’s new Elephant Sanctuary to its stable of authentic, local experiences. The sanctuary, which is in a forest bordering the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, provides the perfect retirement home for sick, injured and older elephants who have previously worked in tourism entertainment or the logging industry.
In the company of rangers, guests take a guided jungle walk and are invited to feed, walk with, and observe the rescued elephants as they roam throughout the sanctuary. There’s a chance to watch the elephants socialise and bathe in the huge fresh water lagoons, and cover themselves in thick mud. In addition to elephants, guests can see a number of wild animals in the park including langurs, barking deer, mouse deer, wild boar, monkeys and gibbons. About one hundred species of bird also inhabit the forest vegetation, and find homes in the trees, creepers and climbers. Lunch is served to guests from a ‘tree top observation platform’. Commenting on the new experience, Dawid Koegelenberg, GM for Paresa said “We are delighted to be supporting the elephant sanctuary which is pioneering ethical elephant tourism in Phuket and provides a unique new option for our guests to see and interact with these magnificent animals”. This half day experience costs from £112 (THB4,900) per person including transport, driver and guide, entry to the sanctuary and lunch. Other guest experiences include a visit to the markets in Old Phuket and a day to work, cook and eat with a rice farmer. Prices at Paresa Resort Phuket start from £240 per night in an Ocean Pool Suite including a sparkling wine breakfast. The resort is featured by a range of tour operators in the UK.
