Surrounded by ancient olive groves, almond and carob trees and set in more than 200km of rolling countryside, near San Llorenç on Mallorca’s east coast, Son Penya Petit Hotel & Spa, is a former Finca with 20 beautifully appointed stone-built rooms and suites, eight of them having private pools. They have also invested in a small fleet of brand-new electric BMW i3 series cars with charging points in the car park to keep them topped up and ready to go. The move to electric vehicles was also made to supports BMW’s aim to make Mallorca its ‘electric mobility island’ with charging points positioned across the island. Guests can hire an electric car by the day, exploring the island possibly taking in the quieter east coast National Parks, stopping off at the dramatic coastal caves of Cuevas del Drach at nearby Porto Cristo or popping golf clubs into the boot to pocket 18 holes at a nearby golf course. The rooms Son Penya has 20 rooms which all have a private terrace full of olive, lemon and almond trees. There are five double rooms and seven junior suites. A further seven deluxe junior suites have private pools. The largest room is the 70 metre square Villa Aina Suite which has a separate lounge, designer bathroom, shady outdoor terrace and private pool. All the rooms are designed for the greatest comfort, in a soothing palate of soft white and neutral tones to reflect the natural honey coloured Mallorcan marés stone walls and wooden beam ceilings. Spa and Wellness Centre New for 2019 the hotel has refurbished the spa and wellness centre with a brand-new steam room and jacuzzi. These complement the warm soothing water of the indoor pool, the Swedish sauna and the well-equipped gym, which has panoramic windows leading on to magnificent views of the rolling countryside beyond. Spa treatments can be given in the spa and in guest rooms with the signature, 90-minute Calm of Mallorca Ritual, mixing the locally grown almond oil, with rosemary from the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, local lavender and salt from Ses Salines (150€) Guests can enjoy yoga in the garden (bookable in advance) beside the large outdoor pool with its shady day beds and cabanas. Or more active guests can choose from a range of off-road and racing bikes to get out and about on the nearby Greenway or ‘La Via Verda,’ a 29 km car-free path linking Manacor with Arta. In this safe yet challenging environment guests can follow self-guided routes or opt to walk and run along this scenic disused railway line, whilst taking in the beautiful Mallorcan countryside. 5’S Gourmet Restaurant The hotel harvests its own almonds and produces olive oil which it uses in the gourmet 5’S restaurant, who’s elegant and traditional décor conserves the essence of the Son Penya Estate. In summer tables spill outside on to a terrace for breakfast, lunch and dinner, shaded under the knarred branches of ancient olives trees. The menu is a fusion of international cuisine and is complemented by wines from the hotel’s small cellar which features mainly natural, locally produced varieties by Toni Gelabert Wines. Expert wine tasting is available on request. Plans are underway to plant a vineyard on land by the hotel in order for Son Penya to produce its own natural wines and to develop an organic garden, using the produce in the restaurant. They also own Hotel L’Avenida, a 12-bedroom mansion house in the centre of Soller, which they bought in July 2018 from the hotel’s founders, British couple, Paul and Tania Slijper. Since then they have completed the first phase of a complete renovation to Hotel L’Avenida, refreshing the interiors of its two junior suites, creating a new cosy seating area overlooking the pool and garden and removing all plastics from the hotel to enable L’Avenida to become a plastic free hotel.
