Located in the Mallorcan mountain retreat of Soller, the chic, 12- bedroom, adult only Hotel L’Avenida has recently been bought by Mallorquin hoteliers, the Balaguer family. Under this new ownership, the hotel, which mixes its original 19th century Modernist’ style architecture with a modern twist, has begun the first phase of a complete renovation to the property. Refreshing the interiors of its two junior suites, the rooms now feature a lighter and brighter palate of cool greys and greens, incorporating a new cosy seating area overlooking the pool and garden. The new design has also created a focal point on the feature wall behind the modern four poster bed with a soothing back-lit forest scene of trees, echoing the woodland areas that surround the local Tramuntana hillside and reach down to the sea beyond.
On the ground floor a cool new indoor bar and dining area has been created leading out on to the lush, remodelled courtyard garden and sun-bathing terrace surrounding the large swimming pool. Offering more flexibility for guests to dine in the shade and yet be close to the pool in the summer, it also provides a relaxed area under cover in the cooler months. With seating for up to 12 people, it still retains its magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage Tramuntana Mountains beyond. The new owners are passionate about the sustainability of Mallorca’s precious natural resources and to these ends have eliminated all single use plastics from the hotel, such as replacing water bottles with refillable containers in the bedrooms and reworking the bathroom amenities, to enable L’Avenida to become a plastic free hotel. Owner, Rafael Balaguer Mestre, says “L’Avenida is once again a real head-turner in terms of design and architecture in Soller. We knew when we acquired the hotel that it had a superb reputation for offering high end service in an environment of complete relaxation combined with unparalleled style. However, hotels are constantly evolving and living experiences that need to be kept fresh and exciting to ensure clients continue to receive the experience of a lifetime. It is with this in mind that we have refreshed some of the design details whilst retaining all the essential elements of the guest experience”. The hotel is located on the elegant, tree lined Gran Via in Soller and the front of the property has a laid-back, cosy lobby bar where deli-style lunches, home-made cakes and retro ice lollies can be ordered by guests and passers-by. The cool vibe oozes from the smoked grey walls featuring a series of convex oversized fish eye mirrors and an enormous original artwork by local Soller artist, Miguel Bernat Busquets. A 'micro' cardio-based gym offers a small range of professional FFIT-TECH equipment with a treadmill, cross trainer, bikes and suspension/sling trainer. For soothing spa treatments L'Avenida Wellness features a range of therapeutic in-room Kama Ayerveda massages and treatments. The hotel is five minutes from Soller’s bustling town square and 10 minutes by tram from the beach and harbour of Port Soller. The port has itself been transformed over the last few years with a beautiful new pedestrian boulevard running along the length of the beach, enabling visitors to step from the tram and into a choice of restaurants and bars directly on the pavement overlooking the sea. The capital city, Palma, is just 30 minutes’ drive away. Beyond the hotel a full range of activities include local yacht charter with beach picnic, hiking in the surrounding Tramuntana Mountains, private tennis lessons with a fully qualified coach, golf at nearby Son Termens 18-hole golf course, guided vineyard and local market tours. A one-night stay costs from €145 per room per night B&B low season (13 Feb–30 March) and from €265 per room, per night high season (1 May–30 September) **. Notes to editors In July 2018 the hotel was sold by its founders, British couple, Paul and Tania Slijper, to Mallorquin hoteliers, the Balaguer family, who have a strong background in construction and hotels on Mallorca. They also own the idyllic Son Penya Petit Hotel & Spa, a former Finca with 20 beautifully appointed stone-built rooms and suites, some with private pools, just outside the village of San Llorenç on Mallorca’s east coast. History of L’Avenida L’Avenida started life in 1907 as a private house designed by the famous Spanish architect Joan Rubio i Bellver, who worked with Antonio Gaudi as a pupil and colleague. He was one of the most important exponents of Gaudi’s architectural principles of design and a leader in the movement that became known as Gaudinismo or Modernism. Following a meticulous restoration, the hotel originally opened in 2007 as an eight-bedroom hotel and quickly became the coolest hotel in the area. It developed an enviable reputation for delivering a quirky mix of high-end service, glorious interiors and a heart-felt welcome, picking up a string of accolades including recognition as one of the top 20 hotels in the whole of Spain. It still retains many of Rubio’s original features with the original frescoes and plasterwork on the ceilings as well as its magnificent marble floors, metalwork and staircase that spirals up through the building. Throughout the property each room still reflects the original design, cleverly mixing old with new. Comments are closed.
