Often known as 'Old Glory' or simply the 'Stars and Stripes', the iconic American flag takes centre stage this month thanks to Jasper Johns: 'Something Resembling Truth', a new exhibition (running 23 September - 10 December 2017) at London's Royal Academy of Arts. As one of America's greatest living artists, Johns is best known for his interpretations of flags; indeed, 'Flag', one of his earliest and arguably most famous works, beautifully captures the American flag in all its bold, bright colour. The Star-Spangled Banner itself has an intriguing history. Its 50 stars represent the US states, while its 13 stripes remember the original British colonies that declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. The design was first brought to life by seamstress Betsy Ross in Philadelphia, making her one of the Revolution's leading female patriots.
Her workshop at 239 Arch Street (now known as the Betsy Ross House) is a highlight on An American History Tour with tailor-made specialist, Bon Voyage. Starting in Philadelphia, the self-drive itinerary takes in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina before ending in Washington, DC, covering all the essentials of the American story en route. From walking streets once trod by George Washington to standing in the room where American Independence was declared, An American History Tour takes road-trippers to fabled sites from the USA's past. Of interest are Civil War battlefields, Amish Country and the Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania; Thomas Jefferson's mountaintop mansion in Virginia; and the historic, 250-room Biltmore Estate in North Carolina - still officially America's largest home. A few days exploring Washington's many monuments and museums (including the White House and Lincoln Memorial) completes the story. Costing from £1,925 per person, An American History Tour can be fully tailor-made and includes flights, car hire, 14 nights' accommodation and a personalised road book complete with travel tips and directions.
